$34m a work of art

LABOR yesterday announced a $34.6 million arts initiative, including an innovation centre and a program to improve community access to the arts.

Opposition arts spokesman Peter Garrett announced Labor's policy at a performance in Parramatta, Sydney, that drew high-profile entertainers, including Cate Blanchett and David Wenham.

He said Labor would spend $17 million over four years on a Creative Industries Innovation Centre to support arts companies, students and research, $10 million over four years on an Australia Council program to improve opportunities for Australians to participate in art and cultural activities, and $7.6 million on Aboriginal art centres.
