Thu Oct 21, 2004

The 2004 Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival kicked off Thursday morning with a beachside introduction to the jurists for the Golden Maile Award.

Cinema author Dr. Eugene Levy, Maggie Cheung of "The Soong Sisters" and "Hero," and David Wenham who played Faramir in "Lord of the Rings" and starred in "Moloka'i, the Story of Father Damien."

"A great thing about this film festival; it does bridge east and west. It has a large component of films from Asia, which is fabulous. So, I think it's a bridge between the two worlds," Wenham said.

The festival opens Thursday evening with the Hawaii Theatre debut of the USA/France film "Clean," starring Cheung.

HIFF will show more than 168 films from 24 countries. HIFF began in 1981.
